The Hyperloop Hype
The images from the full-scale test site of Hyperloop One in Nevada just got released. I am thrilled to witness such progress because this is history in the making. This is going to revolutionize the transportation industry and will be a massive hit on aviation.
Even now the railway industry can be considered a superior choice where high-speed trains are available. It is, in fact, dominating the aviation industry in certain regions but there is a limit to it. It is only advantageous where the distance is less than 400km. Its speed limit (~200kmph) hinders its advantages like capacity, cost, less travel time overhead, and less CO2 emission.
In such a scenario, where on almost all aspects, a superior alternative might be available in the next 20 years, how will the aviation industry be affected? With Hyperloop, based on the technology, it will be possible to travel by 1400 kmph. That will remove the limits that apply to high-speed trains. The only limit will be terrain and overseas transportation. Well, for now…
Instead of disregarding such revelation, focusing on how to adapt such changes is the key element. While this might be a far-fetched hypothesis, for now, it's beneficial to have an open mind about the possible implications.
Hyperloop will most probably be available in intra-regional transportation due to restrictions. The scale of these regions might vary and there might be inter-regional connectivity as well. These regions will be the new hubs of the travel industry. But limits will still apply. Therefore, the railways and airlines should cooperate to produce the best possible outcome for the end-consumer. Airlines should provide the connection where Hyperloop lines can’t meet. In that case, they will enable the fastest and smoothest transportation for travelers.
There is already a deal between Hyperloop One and the United Arab Emirates to set up a Hyperloop line between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We will experience this case study first hand and how Gulf Carriers, especially Emirates and Etihad will react to this change. This will set an example for the rest of the world, good or bad.
It is now, essential for the investors and the airlines to welcome this change to get the best out of this situation. Resisting to what’s best for the consumer will never work for anyone. Thus, it’s crucial to adapt and it’s always the most fundamental thing for any industry, to be customer oriented.
